The Black Series Baylon Skoll figure review

Toy Analysis: Baylan Small to Baylan Skoll

Here’s a series we started on Facebook. We try to take some of the more popular or complex figures and give you a deeper look at them. Sometimes, if there an issue with a figure, we’ll point it out. Two figures that have been all the rage for many reasons have been Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati. So we’ll start with Baylan, and be sure to stay tuned for our in-depth look at Shin next.

Baylan is a great looking figure all by itself, but height is obviously an issue! There are also a few other issues with the figure. From the first initial images, when Baylan and Shin were first revealed, many were quick to point out that Baylan seemed to be too short, while Shin seemed to be too tall. As soon as some top customizers got them in hand they tried various fixes for the figures.

The initial fix that I saw was to swap Baylan’s thighs with Reva’s. I did not have a spare Reva, and currently I think her price is too high for custom fodder. The same for a secondary option I saw where Darth Malgus’ thighs were used. I also saw another post where someone cut a few millimeters off of Shin’s thighs and added that to the middle of Baylan’s. I did not trust myself to be that accurate. So time to go through the fodder bin.

The fix I found for the height ended up being Fifth brother’s thighs. Fifth Brother works to add about 5mm and the thigh swivel. If you swap the entire leg you’ll get more height, but lose the lower leg armor.

You can boil and pop to separate the leg parts. I’ve included a hot water heater in the links below. I have found that using a hot water kettle and pouring the water over a figure sitting in a bowl does the trick. Some people tend to drop the figure in a pot over the stove but you could risk overheating the figure and warping or damaging it.

You can see the difference with an unaltered Shin Hati. She still needs to be shorter, but it’ll do if you only wanted to customize one of them.

When the figure was starting to hit shelves our friends at Yakface.com noticed there was a running change in the color of the saber blade that came with both Shin and Baylan. Many noticed during the initial figure reveal that they came with a red blade, whereas in the show it was a more orangey red. With that being said, I know some of you had some questions about the running change in the color of Baylan’s blade. The orange is very noticeable, especially when next to a red blade.

I think some had speculated it was a reuse of the Malgus blade’s mold given the size. It’s a new blade and is shorter than the Malgus blade. It’s still too long in my opinion. The hilt is very soft and rubbery.

The other issue is there is big gap between the hips and torso. The belt/skirt originally sits above the hip notches, rather than locking in. When fixing the legs, don’t slide the belt into the notches.
