Shin Hati Returns: Is it better!
Shin Hati, Take 2: Is it better?
Shin Hati was re-released this week. I honestly was going to pass on this, but Target had some amazing deals on toys, and I was able to get her for only $13! The question everyone has been asking is, “What’s the difference between the Target exclusive version and the original?” Overall not much. The primary difference is the inclusion of a soft goods cloak. If you’re an in-box collector, or even one who is just going to put it on the shelf, you may not notice any other differences. On average, nothing looks different on the figure, and it is the same mold. The side by side my original Shin Hati (it was modified to have the correct height see the process here).
The next big difference is the saber. The hilt is a smidge smaller, and you can see more details on the emitter on the newer one. The blade is a bit clearer and darker in color. It’s closer to red than orange, but it’s not fully red. You can see the difference with the Vader saber in the middle of one of the pictures. I think I prefer the slightly more orange blade.
Another difference is the paint apps. Overall things are similar. I did notice the skirt did not seem to be as well painted as the original. And the new one seems to not be finished.
As I was looking at the two figures, I noticed that there might be a difference in size between the Old and new Shin Hati. I borrowed a micrometer and started to measure the head, which was the first thing I noticed with my eyes. It did appear smaller just by a few fractions of an inch. It made me undo my leg swap of the original. It is smaller overall but just by fractions of an inch. It looks a tiny bit better and ok next to an altered Baylan than the original, but next to the reissued Baylan, you barely notice the difference, and she probably needs to be altered. If you want to alter the figure, see our guide here.
Given that it is practically the same sculpt I’m sure the same fixes will work. The smaller Shin head might be more accurate with the corrected height.
So should we commend Hasbro for trying to change the size of Shin? I’m not sure. It’s still not accurate and not sure it’s worth the price of $24.99, but at $13 it’s decent custom fodder. If you don’t have a Shin Hati at all, this would probably be the one to get as the cape helps to add value to the figure.
