Roll Out: The Target R5-D4 Droid Set is here
Star Wars: The Mandalorian R5-D4, BD-72, and Pit Droids Black Series Action Figure Set (Target Exclusive) is now in stock and shipping out.
Here’s our quick review of this set! Overall, it’s an awesome set. I pre-ordered mine when Target had it on sale a few months ago. It was worth getting it at $33.99. If you don’t have an R5, it’s also a good set to get. The original R5 was priced at $24.99. The set does come in at $44.99 and comes with four droids total. We’ll take a look at them and compare previous versions.
R5-D4 – Is this version different from the original release yes but not by a lot! There is one big difference. The new R5 comes with leg rockets and removable leg panels. In our review of the new droid body from a while back, we did suspect it was coming. The flame part of the thrusters is removable. Another difference is the exclusion of the motivator part and removable panel from the Dome of R5-D4. To be honest I just learned this was a feature on the earlier R5-D4. It would have been nice to have them keep it, and I am not sure why this part was not included as both R5s are for the Mandalorian sub-line for the Black Series. The last difference, which is very minor, is that the grey plastic for the “metal” parts is several shades lighter than the earlier version.
The pit droids – This is my first time owning these droids. They were previously available in a Galaxy’s Edge droid set, which was a Disney Store exclusive. These are the first time they are offered outside of Disney parks and the Disney Store. These jump right off the screen! They are a great likeness of what we saw in the show and in the Phantom Menace. They are very posable, and you can get them to go into their “off” position!
The BD Unit BD-72 is overall the same figure we’ve seen offered several times before, either with a version of Cal Kestis as BD-1 or with a holiday figure. The paint is different to match the appearance from Season 3 of The Mandalorian. Here are a few comparison shots of all the in-universe versions of the BD units.
So what do you think? Is this a must-have for your collection? It’s a set that pushes the Black Series into becoming more of a world-building line. If you make dioramas and want background droids, or if you want to recreate scenes from “The Mandalorian,” this is a fun set to get. If it goes on sale again or hits clearance I’ll grab a second set to repaint.
