Simple and Affordable Dioriamas with Extreme Sets: Part 1
If you don’t know about Extreme Sets Dioramas, let me introduce you to them! They make cardboard pop-up diormas. I have five in total; I’ll review them to help you decide if they are what you need for your displays. We’ll start with their Sector 07 Docking Bay and Sector 03. These two are closer to a spaceship or spaceport interior.
Sector 07 Docking Bay
Here is what you get in the box from their website:
- One (1) double-sided large opening door 12.5″ tall x 16.5″ wide x 3.5″ deep (Right out of box easy assembly)
- One (1) double-sided small opening door 12.5″ tall x 16.5″ wide x 3.5″ deep (Right out of box easy assembly)
- Three (3) double-sided panels 12.5″ tall x 7.5″ wide x 3.5″ deep
- Three (3) double-sided 3.5” wide x 12.5” tall x 2″ deep panels
- One (1) hologram table 3.5″ tall x 6″ wide x 6” deep
- Four (4) 12” wide x 19” long ground panels
- One (1) 3D elevated flat bed
This one in particular is more reminiscent of a worn freighter ship – maybe something Hondo might have in his fleet. Lots of dingey grey with rust and worn patterns. It’s double-sided and can be set up in various ways. It does come with a command station and a plastic insert that gives the illusion of a hologram projection. It also comes with a “bed” piece that slips into one of the wall boxes for extra stability. Both add to the instant playability of the set.
It comes with four floor panels that interlock. If you’re keeping static that might be the way to go. Since I indulge in toy photography, I just overlay the ends. When assembling the set I’d recommend watching a YouTube video as the instructions are a little vague.
Sector 3
Here’s what you get in the box:
- One (1) double-sided large opening door 12.5″ tall x 16.5″ wide x 3.5″ deep (Right out of the box easy assembly)
- One (1) double-sided small opening door 12.5″ tall x 16.5″ wide x 3.5″ deep (Right out of the box easy assembly)
- Three (3) double-sided panels 12.5″ tall x 7.5″ wide x 3.5″ deep
- Three (3) double-sided 3.5” wide x 12.5” tall x 2″ deep panels
- Four (4) 12” wide x 19” long ground panels
Another diorama with a similar shape is the Sector 3 diorama. This one is unique in that, rather than all sides being more uniform like the Sector 7 Diorama, there are two different sides – a clean, shiny side and a worn side with jungle overgrowth. It comes with two worn floor panels and two clean floor panels. You could use all four if you want, but overall it makes for a smaller set up. Yet with the option of a clean and worn side, it gives you two different diorama options, especially if you engage in toy photography.
This one does not come with any extra diorama pieces like the previous set, so it may look a little bare.
One aspect that you can do to make this set your own is slide printed images over the door panels to give the illusion of windows or spaceports. With Sector 3, I even merged it with another background from a different company to give the illusion that it was the worn outer door of a base/temple. You can always print sign images and place them on the walls. For our Father’s day image I combined both sets to make a mini theater.
You can get the sets both here:
